How to Fix Car Ignition Switch Problems

If your car starts and runs, but the ignition switch isn't able to turn on the spark plugs, there may be a number of reasons. Some are easy and cheap to fix, others require special tools and assistance from an expert mechanic.

First, you need to lubricate the socket of the key. You can use graphite powder, or a silicon aerosol spray. Make sure that the ignition cylinder has no loose springs or obstructions.

Battery

It could be that your battery is dead if your car isn't starting. This is a common problem that can be resolved by charging the battery or making a jump. If this does not fix the problem your ignition switch could be bad. This component is responsible for transferring battery power to other electrical components like the starter motor as well as the ignition coil. If the ignition switch is damaged, it is not able to allow current be passed through, and the engine won't begin.

The battery is the main source of the electrical energy in your car. The battery is a black, slender box with positive (+) and negatively (-) terminals on the top. The terminals may become corroded and prevent the battery from providing electricity to the rest of the vehicle. You can clean the battery terminals by disconnecting the battery and using a wire brush to remove any corrosion. You can also clean the terminals using baking soda as a solution.

It is also possible that your car battery has just reached the end of its life and needs to be replaced. A new battery will supply the right voltage to your vehicle’s spark plugs. This is necessary for a functioning engine.

The ignition coil is responsible for converting low voltage from the battery to high voltage that will spark the spark plugs in your car to start the engine. If the ignition and key replacement coil is faulty it will not be in a position to ignite the plugs and the engine won't start. You can test the ignition coil by checking for a spark inside the engine or turning the key to see whether the engine is turning.

You might also have to replace the starter motor. If you hear a grinding sound when you turn the ignition key it is a sign that the starter bearings are deteriorating. It could be a costly repair, so it's best to replace your starter motor as soon as you detect signs of wear. Changing the starter motor is an easy task that requires the replacement of some bolts and parts.

Alternator

The alternator is the one that charges your battery and powers the electrical parts of your car while the engine is running. If you suspect a problem with your alternator you should test the battery first. This will help you determine whether your alternator is causing the battery to run out or whether your battery is simply old and should be replaced.

The alternator in your car also provides the power to the dashboard lights, windshield wipers and electric steering, power windows heated seats, and your radio even when the car is running. A voltmeter can be utilized to test the voltage of your alternator and battery. If your battery's voltage is lower than 6 volts, it should be replaced or charged as soon as possible. A low or dead battery will also prevent the starter motor from turning the engine and will require additional jumper cables to start your car.

Before you begin dismantling the alternator, ensure the ignition is off and all doors are locked. Unplug the negative cable and store it safely. Wear safety equipment. Check out a specific vehicle repair manual to learn how to gain access to the alternator, as well as any other components you'll need to take off.

After you've removed the belt, if your vehicle is equipped with one, disconnect the warning light wire from the back of the alternator. This will usually connect directly to a terminal on the alternator that's labeled either WL or IND. Some vehicles, however have a separate relay to perform this function. If your warning light does not appear, you must suspect a different problem.

It is recommended to regularly check your alternator for signs of malfunction. While you can do some of the tests by yourself, you should bring your vehicle to Les Schwab for a free inspection and expert advice. Our technicians can test for corrosion on your battery, battery posts (+ and +), fuses, relays and voltage output as well as cold starting amps and many more.

Starter Motor

The starter motor is a crucial component in the ignition system. It is responsible for turning over the engine so that it can take into air, which is necessary to ignite the fuel. It is common that the starter motor will be at fault when your car doesn't turn. There are a few ways to troubleshoot that can help you diagnose the problem and fix ignition switch it.

When you turn on your vehicle's ignition key, a switch inside the starter activates a pinion gear that fits into grooves in the flywheel. The pinion gear then turns the flywheel, which then starts the engine. When you release the key the pinion gear retracts and is released from the flywheel to avoid damage.

There are a myriad of things that can cause problems with the starter motor, for example, an electrical issue in the internal windings, a mechanical problem (such as teeth not meshing with the pinion gear or flywheel) or a dead battery. A defective starter motor will sound like a dead battery; it'll make a click when it attempts to turn over the engine, but won't.

If the starter motor isn't working, one of the first things a mechanic would examine is the condition of charge of the battery and its terminals. If the battery is not fully charged or has rust on its terminals it will need to be charged or replaced.

Depending on the degree of the problem The mechanic can also examine the solenoid of the starter with a multimeter. The solenoid is a huge magnetic switch that sends a rush of power from the battery cables that are long and thick to the starter. This switch basically connects the long battery cable to the windings inside the starter that actually make the electric motor turn as well as it pulls a rod that actuates an engaging fork that will then push the pinion gear to automatically engage with the flywheel.

Another option is to disable the ignition switch with a jumper wire. This is only an interim solution that you should not try it unless certain of the procedure. You will need to carefully connect your jumper wires to the battery terminals, and make sure that the switch is in the "Start position".

Ignition Switch

The ignition switch is where you insert your key into the car. This switch is used by the system to start the engine and send electric current to the starter. However, it is not immune to wear like other parts of the car. The switch could also become stuck in its slot or get locked. It is important to check for issues regularly to identify the problem before your car doesn't start.

If your key is a struggle to turn, or gets stuck in the ignition, it might be locked. This is a problem that occurs in many vehicles due to a lack oil lubrication. You can make use of a graphite or silicone-based oil to lubricate your release pin. Spray a little into the ignition and try moving the key. If you're stuck you can try using a piler or hacksaw blade.

An ignition problem can lead to a number of other issues too. The anti-theft device may not function, or the starter motor may not crank when you put in the key. This could also cause the other functions to stop functioning or cease to function.

A damaged ignition may cause additional wear and tear on other components. For instance, if have a heavy keychain or a variety of items on your keychain it could put strain on the ignition switch when you put it in, and could increase the wear and tear on its internal components. Extreme temperature fluctuations may affect the lubricants and materials used in the ignition switch.

It's important to test the replacement ignition switch prior to reassembling other components and the steering column. Make sure that the switch works and that the engine is running without issue. It is also important to confirm that the new ignition switch is compatible with your vehicle's model and model. If you're unsure of your ability to install a new ignition switch you might consider employing a dealership service shop to install it for you. They can also test the new switch and install any other components that require connecting or replaced.
