Porto Rico Importing Co.

The aroma of freshly roasting beans fills the air when you enter this West Village shop. The shelves are stacked with jars, sacks and dark brown beans, along with coffee-making equipment, tea accessories and sugar.

Porto Rico, originally opened in 1907 by Italian immigrants Patsy Albonese. At the time, Greenwich Village was seeing an large influx of Italian immigrants who set up establishments to cater to their dietary requirements. Albanese named her shop after the renowned Puerto Rican coffee she imported (and sold) - - a drink that was so popular that even the Pope drank it.

Porto Rico offers 130 different varieties of beans, including those from around the globe in three locations, including Bleecker Street, Essex Market and online. Porto Rico also roasts their own beans and offers wholesale distribution for 350 restaurants in NYC, Brooklyn and Brooklyn.

Peter Longo, current owner and president, was raised in the family bakery on Bleecker Street, where his father ran Porto Rico. He continues to run the shop in a similar way as his father and grandfather.

Sey Coffee

The shop is located along Grattan Street in Morgantown, Brooklyn's Bushwick neighborhood, Sey Coffee is both a roaster and coffee beans unroasted - try www.coffeee.uk - shop. Co-founders Tobin Polk and Lance Schnorenberg, both 33 started roasting in the fourth-floor loft around the corner from their new location in 2011 under the name Lofted Coffee (with local clients including Greenpoint's Budin and Soho cart service Peddler).

Sey's decision to buy micro-lots, and even whole harvests, from farmers who are one has earned it the respect of New York City coffee enthusiasts. In 2011, Sey purchased a six-bag micro lot of Danilo Dones Sitio Catucai from Brazil's Espirito-Santo region. The beans were harvested at the peak of ripeness, and floated to remove any defects. They were then dried on the farm following a 36-hour dry fermentation. The result is a cup that has hints of melons and berries.

Sey's commitment goes beyond its shop to improve the overall well-being of staff and growers, as well as customers. It utilizes composts and biodegradable disposables to keep waste out of landfills. This helps to reduce greenhouse gases and nourish the soil. It also eliminates gratuity, a move that puts the baristas in a position to support their livelihoods and motivate them to focus on their craft.

La Cabra

La Cabra is a modern specialty coffee company that was founded in Aarhus, Denmark in 2012. They started with a small store and a dedicated staff. Their honesty and ingenuity to delivering a truly exceptional coffee experience has earned them a following not only in their home town however, but across the globe.

La Carba follows a strict method to select their best beans. They search through hundreds of beans each year to find those that best meet their ideals. They then roast them very light, adjusting the desired flavor profile. This gives the coffees a more vibrant taste and clarity.

The East Village store opened last October, with a minimalist and sleek design. It's been praised by international coffee enthusiasts for its scrumptious pour overs and baked goods supervised by head baker Jared Sexton, who's previously worked at Bien Cuit and Dominique Ansel.

The shop utilizes the La Marzocco modbar and the cups and plates are custom-designed at Wurtz ceramics in Horsens, the son and father studio. In a recent interview with Atlanta Coffee Shops, General Manager Ian Walla reveals that La Cabra serves approximately 250 different coffees a year, and usually has seven or eight varieties available at any given time.

The Plant Coffee Roasting Plant Coffee

The Roasting Plant A multi-unit coffee retailer, roasts and brews the coffee on site. Each cup is brewed and roasted according to your specifications within less than an hour. It searches the world wide for the highest-grade, directly sourced specialty beans that provide customers with a choice and quality.

Their roaster on site is a fluid bed machine, which is different from traditional drum machines that are used in UK coffee shops. The beans are blown around in the heated box by high-speed air which keeps the beans in a suspended state and allows roasting to happen in a steady manner throughout the machine.

I tried the Sumatran Coffee and it was incredibly rich and velvety with a velvety flavor. Dark chocolate was evident in the aroma. As you sip the coffee, there were subtle citrus fruit flavours.

The roasted coffee will be taken to the store's Eversys Super-Automatic brewing Machines and brewed according to your specifications in less than one minute. Customers can select from a variety of single origins and a variety of blends.

Parlor Coffee

It was founded in 2012 in the back of a barbershop, complete with an espresso machine with a single group, Parlor Coffee has become a growing roastery, whose beans can be found in top restaurants, cafes and home brewers throughout the city. Parlor is committed to sourcing top-quality beans from all over the world Each one has had to endure a lengthy journey before getting into the hands of its roasters.

In their own words the owners "have an unstoppable passion for craft and believe that good coffee should be available to everyone." They accomplish that with their down-to-earth area on a residential street. Think compost bins, chalkboard welcome hand-made up-cycled goods, and low-frills deco.

They roast and make their own blends and single-origins (there were six at the time I was there) However, they also do cuppings Sundays, which are open to the public. Imagine it as a brewery tasting area where you can smell and taste the beans in the ground. They range from earthy to chocolatey (one was similar to tomato!). It's a bit off the beaten track, but it's worth the drive.
